I had this same problem and I was unable to find an answer to my
problem. Thinking that it hasn't occurred before, I thought it was my
system and spent many hours looking at this and that. I emailed the
author and got no reply. 

I eventually joined this list and posted my problem - I got an answer
back quickly. My question though is why on earth is this problem not
listed on the ftape site or anywhere else OTHER than
www.linuxtapecert.org?

I feel this is another reason why the current Linux bandwagon will
fizzle out very quickly when people have to grapple with this kind of
problem and find out that they must join an email list in order to
solve it ... anyway, that's another debate for another time.
