Do you have a _fully_configured_linux_kernel_ , i.e. 
did you ever compile your own kernel ? A valid
kernel configuration for your running kernel is 
mandatory, as stated in the docs of ftape. 
Otherwise ftape cannot gather important information needed.
BTW, if you have a linux 2.2 kernel there is no need to compile ftape,
as it is already contained in the kernel sources. The parameters for 
your drive can be entered during kernel configuration.
