Ok, it turned out the copy I downloaded was corrupt. So, I got a good copy of
ftape-4.x-1999_09_11.tar.gz and am now able to make.

But I get the above error, and I don't know what it means in order to correct my
problem.

I'm running RH 6.2 (2.2.14-5) and trying to use a Ditto Easy 3.2gb parallel port
drive. My machine has the older Asus m/b, and when I went to make sure the parallel
port was set to PPP, I learned from the BIOS my parallel address is 3BC and my IRQ is
7 (before this I had been using 370 thinking it was a standard parallel port address).
I have no printer installed and only one parallel port.

So .. in MCONFIG, I selected the following
#
# For a Micro Solutions opispo "backpack" based parallel port drive, try
#
BPCK_DEV=0
FDC_OPT += -DCONFIG_FT_FDC_PARPORT_$(BPCK_DEV)=-1 \
                -DCONFIG_FT_PAR_$(BPCK_DEV)=1 \
                -DCONFIG_FT_BPCK_$(BPCK_DEV)=1

(I also tried with BPCK_DEV=1 with the same results)

And in insert, the following:
insmod ./ftape.o ft_fdc_driver=bpck-fdc,none,none,none ft_tracings=3,3,3,3,3
insmod ./zftape.o ft_major_device_number=27
insmod parport
insmod parport_pc io=0x3BC irq=7
rmmod lp
insmod ./bpck-fdc.o

With these results:

What am I doing wrong? What does the error message mean?
