G'day all,

After reading the "upFRONT" (editorial piece) page 10 of the March
2001 Linux Journal, I did some thinking about the great work being
done by Linux USB developers, and the lack of knowledge and
recognition that doesn't always get provided, and thought I might do
a little evangalism on the side. The main aspect is to press
releases of important work that is being done, or has recently been
released.

The PR strategy is to raise the awareness of Linux USB with USB
device manufacturers and distributors, and to ensure that users
get excited about the wonderful things Linux USB can do. The goal
of that strategy is to get greater support from manufacturers to
provide open source device drivers, or to provide devices and
documents (and perhaps funding) to developers. So the release
area is any USB channel I can find (e.g. USB-IF, allusb.com,
usbnews.com) but probably not directly to any vendors - letters
would be better. Co-incident release of the press release to
Linux channels (lwn.net, Linux Journal, Linux Magazine, linuxpr.com)
to make sure that there is a market for all this work that we
are doing.

To keep interest up, I would like to be able to do a press release
about every three-four weeks. No more often than every second week,
and no more infrequently than every second month. This is to try to
fit
with typical magazine publishing schedules.

I admit that my strategy does contain an element of self interest,
since I would like to diversify into doing device driver development
for money. At least as a part time activity. However this is still
in the interests of the Linux USB community, so I don't feel too
guilty (or too optimistic, to be honest) about my goal.

I am looking at doing different styles of press-releases for
different things. Some will be written in more of an article style
(basically only requiring minor editing before publication), while
others will be more of an announcement style.

So far I have written three press releases - one on Linux 2.4 USB
support, one on Linux USB multimedia, and a third on USB 2.0
support. The first one is kind of a
"scene setting" piece, while the other two are more directed, and
aim to get manufacturers interested.

I would like feedback on the first two, including how people feel
about PR in general, whether the style is considered appropriate (I
know only a little about public relations), the technical accuracy
of the pieces, and whether there should be more recognition of the
contributions of developers (e.g. by naming them in relation to
their work). Also, note the obnoxious copyright message on the draft
releases - if anyone knows of a better way to do this, please let me
know.

See followup messages, and please provide feedback. Even if you
don't want to publish to the list, I'd still appreciate private
comments.

Brad
