Greetings,

Today I released the first version of a Philips webcam driver that contains
enough source code to get a working webcam on all Linux platforms that
support USB. Release 7.0 contains only a small binary part which is
completely optional (with some degradation in features, yes).

However, since the only platform upon which the driver was availabe so far
is the x86 Intel processor, I though this is significant enough to warrant
a single announcement on this list. I am particularely interested to see if
the code works on non-Intel platforms too.

After quite a bit of talking, The NDA that I signed with Philips has been
relaxed such that all the core features of the webcam driver are now no
longer protected by the NDA. The part that remains is the decompressor,
which is included in the package as a .o file; however, linkage of this part
is completely optional, so those who do not want or cannot use this can turn
it off in the kernel configuration menus. Without it, there are limitations
on the image-sizes and framerates supported by the drvier.

This just shows what you can get with some diplomacy and good talking. It
may take a little time, but this is a big step forward.
