Now I have, and the problem has vanished in a puff of smoke.

First I formatted the disk with ext2. Problem gone, as expected. Then I
reformatted with FAT32 again. Still, writing was as quick as reading.

Well, I thought, the disk is empty. So during the night I copied 15 gigs
worth of files onto it. Writing is still fast.

I'm guessing a mildly corrupted filesystem was the culprit.
