Hi, I'm back.  Sorry about taking so long to reply, due to several weeks
of vacation, LinuxWorld, and catching up with things.  :-)

I finally got around to fleshing out my "ioctl wishlist" for printer.c.
It's posted at "http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/doc/ioctl_requests.html";.
Comments are welcome, especially before I start hacking away, possibly
within the next week or so.

It looks good, although I haven't had a chance yet to try it out.  It
doesn't appear to be in the Roswell "second sighting" beta.  Will there
be another beta before the final 7.2?

I researched this and put the information in the "wishlist" (see above).
As far as I know it is supported on the DeskJet 1220.  Note that the
"PS" in this case is in software, so it isn't actually a PostScript
printer.  I think I answered all your other questions in the "wishlist."
