And they have now recommended that you disable it, according to their
latest kernel advisary, but that isn't the topic on hand here...

The usb-serial driver and the USB ACM driver are separate, and use
different devfs names and different major/minor numbers.  The ACM driver
is for USB modems only.  Do you want a modem at ttys/U%d ?

And then where should the usb-serial driver be at?  Currently it is at
usb/tts/%d .  Shouldn't _that_ be at ttys/U%d according to your above
scheme?
