FYI, regarding my queries about the "unable to handle kernel paging request" error - turns out the code in question, while it has been used on multiple platforms - those platforms are all big-endian. There are some endian issues in the conversion of the motorolla data that need addressed when running on the little-endian x86. So, thanks for the responses, I think I've got it narrowed down. Running ksymoops on a debug build of the driver provided what I needed.
