This patch duplicates changes that I have already sent to Marcelo
against 2.4.18-pre7:

(the patch was really after -pre7 came out, I had missed it.) So it
does not apply cleanly to my tree.
It also contains lots of stuff that isn't a bug fix. I'm only accepting
bug fix patches for 2.4.18-pre right now, as that is all Marcelo is
accepting. I'd be glad to take this patch after 2.4.18-final comes out,
but not right now.
