It won't actually do anything. The info message is malformed, but basically correct. The multicast code tries to figure out if there are too many messages in the multicast list to be supported. If there are, it fails over to the "allmulti" situation (essentially promiscuous multicast). One of the reasons why that is the case is that the device doesn't support real multicast (which is the case for cable modems from the two designs I know of). That case falls through to the info message. The _limit module parameter is (basically) intended to stop excessively large multicast lists jamming up the rest of the network stack, and is based on advice I got from Donald Becker. It only comes into play if you want to reduce it to something less than what the device claims to support.
