That's correct. Probably more than one bug. >hm. i happen to have two such machines in my home, and one is a dual boot config >which also has win98se. on it. under win (and obviously using the same buggy chipset) >i do never observe any problems with that camera. then again, i had to install >something that claimed to be a driver (and came on a cd with the HP camera). so i >guess this could somehow bring the fix with it..... > Come to think of it, I built a Win98SE system for a friend that had a VIA chipset. The USB mouse enumerated, but didn't otherwise work, until I installed the VIA "4-in-1" driver that came with the board. >would it then make sense for me to sniff some usb in the win scenario to generate >data? i have done that once just to see myself making it work and was overwhelmed >with protocol type blah that easily surpassed my comprehension. i suppose i could do >it again if that is any help to you - and i would be glad to use any settings for >those sniffer filters that you might care to recommend. > That probably wouldn't help, since the problem is almost certainly at the PCI level. >i can also try to talk to the via people, but i have no reason to assume that they >will listen to me any more than they would to you, my professional standing with them >ought to be *no rating, unknown entity* or some such. > If you do that, the following links will give you some "ammo": http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q232889 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q246755 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q240075 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q233163 The last link implicates the VT83C572 and VT82C586. Looking through my mail archives, three out of three reports mention the second chip so far. The first link is interesting too. It mentions that a "filter driver" is needed.
