I know. But so far I am quite lucky. :)

I am running standard RH 7.2  2.4.9-21 kernel and when I need a newer
version of some driver  - I just get the necessary files
(for audio/pegasus/ibmcam just one but for usb-storage the whole 
directory) and compile just the single module I need.

Then I can copy it to all RH 7.2 2.4.9-21 machines I use
and forward it to other people if needed.

Risky, but very fast and effective and no reboots are necessary.

I am very gratefull to folks at Red Hat who taught me that ...
