As it is you who are making the requirement to stay on 2.4.2, I would
suggest that you do the backport of the 2.4.18 driver to that kernel
version.  It should not be that difficult.

There have been _many_ kernel updates since 2.4.2, including a few very
important security fixes.  Make sure you let the people making this
requirement realize this, and the potential implications of it (like
forcing you to take longer to do a backport, etc.)
