And I usually give a disclaimer about that cs.tum.edu guide: it's not exactly current, and sometimes describes "usb-uhci" specific behaviors. Though for now it's the most tutorial overview you'll find, and it's largely accurate. In the 2.5 kernel there's also kerneldoc; /usr/src/linux/README summarizes how to make it.
