Yes we should, because of uniformity. It is very confusing for the user to see the systems behaviour change in mysterious, unpredictable ways. Moreover, I often use floppies or CF cards etc as transport medium between machines. Even when a serial number allows one to conclude that this really is the same floppy, one cannot conclude that the contents is still the same. No, media change is media change. Trying to recognize media that we saw earlier is a bad idea.
