Folks, i might well have to be too early closing the bug. Pedro was able to reinvoke the behaviour on ALSA. We're currently trying to do a more substantial differential diagnosis to exclude anything but the usb-stack, which is well possible with the parts we have.

We're running 2.4.19, both UHCI and OHCI. It is not simple to make the above behaviour visible, but we're doing a pretty picky kind of regression testing which shows kinds of problems not necessarily visible under normal circumstances.
