I have try to use 2.4.20 to connect to a USB Card Reader from EagleTec, but the whole system hang after I plug-in the USB Card Reader for a while.
Looks to be some issue with the "uhci" or "usb-storage" drivers,
since your boot log didn't show any EHCI hardware. (So applying
that patch would not have affected anything).

Oddly enough, I'm seeing a similar lockup (even the keyboard does
not work, though the console cursor flashes) with the EHCI driver,
which (in my case) is effectively identical to 2.5.latest, where
that problem does NOT show up. So that lockup is more than a little
bit surprising ... it happens really easily on 2.4 lately.

So I'm thinking usb-storage, or its scsi layer integration, is
more likely to be at fault than both "uhci" and "ehci-hcd" going
bonkers in the same way, and at the same time. The lockup seems
to be happening sometime after the storage thread starts to talk
to the device, sometimes before storage_probe() returns (though
in your case it was "after").
