My devices are USB1.1 indeed.
Can you elaborate on why hubs make things worse  ?

Hmm, is there any gain to expect from using USB-2.0 HCs and/or hubs if the 
devices are all 1.1 ?

Do you get these numbers from the usb stack ? If so, how ?
