Hmm, anyone know what Mac OS X does because that OS supports this reader
by default? The manual claims it's USB mass-storage compatible.

Yep, 'dd if=/dev/scsi/.../disc ...' succeeds on a freshly-inserted card.
Further reads tend to fail.
