Unfortunately, I didn't have a small test which would, say, loop mount/unmount while I insert a cable. I like your fix better, so I am going to do this. I'll keep that check for if (inode->u.usbdev_i.slist.next != NULL) in usbdevfs, and add a printk there. At the time, Greg said that usbfs was going to be rewritten. I think it should be prudent to implement your fix there as well. Then, if usbfs stops keeping inodes around in lists, all to the better.
