I am still about to do that. However, in the meantime I found this out:

Mounting the filesystem on that disk with the sync option seems to help
somewhat. This lowers the data throughput to the disk to about 120 Kb/s, a
little more than I have on my DSL connection - it still takes a lot of
memory then (leaving me with about 4MB left), but in my last attempts I
was able to transfer more than one Gigabyte without a crash. Sadly this
only partly helps, since mkfs / fsck still do things as they always did,
with chances of hanging my PC.
Maybe you find this information useful :)
