Hi,

about half a year ago, I bought an mp3 player, that would not work under linux. Back then I posted to this group and was told that the device used a vendor specific protocol, so it would probably not work as an usb-storage device.
Since I have not been able to get the think to work under windows since I have bought some new motherboard that the player software doesn't like, I would again try to get it to work under linux.
This morning I opened the device to find out what kind of chip is being used. It is a samsung s3bf42f... and there are some specs on samsungs website. The specs I downloaded are some 400 pages and it seems to be detailed enough. Unfortunatelly I have never programmed a driver before so I hope you could answer some questions to help me get on the way.

1) All I actually would like to do first is to transfer files to and from the device. I guess for doing this, I would get away with just looking at the chapter about the usb interface of the chip which is just some 20 pages. Right?

2) Is there any good documentation as to how I should start learning to write a driver for the thing. As far as I have heard, there have been some changes to the device driver stuff in the developer kernels. Would it be easier to write the driver for the 2.4 series of the kernel or for the 2.5/2.6 series.

Thanks a lot

Ralph
