I'm guessing that you 'umount' the drive, e.g., 'umount /dev/sdb'?
After that, also enter 'eject /dev/sdb'.  That won't actually
eject anything, but it should clear a disk table entry for that
drive, so that the next time it is used, a new size can be set
for it.
