You get even more when you turn it into a load option, like all of the
usb-serial drivers have. "modprobe foo debug=1" is much easier to tell
people to do than to rebuild their distro kernel :)

That assumes everyone is willing to spend the extra kernel memory for the strings in those messages, and for the code to use them!

It's reasonable to have both options, but I prefer to have drivers
be small by default ... just logging catastrophes plus start/stop,
and relying on callers to do the right thing with fault codes.
