More details:
I have already tweaked my /etc/hotplug/usb.usermap to do my own device-specific startup. I also added usb-storage and sym53c8xx to my blacklist. But I still get this in my /var/log/messages:
kernel: sym53c875-0-<0,*>: FAST-20 WIDE SCSI 40.0 MB/s (50.0 ns, offset 15) kernel: Device not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive. kernel: sdb : READ CAPACITY failed. kernel: sdb : status = 1, message = 00, host = 0, driver = 08 kernel: Info fld=0xa00 (nonstd), Current sd00:00: sense key Not Ready kernel: sdb : block size assumed to be 512 bytes, disk size 1GB. kernel: sdb: I/O error: dev 08:10, sector 0 kernel: I/O error: dev 08:10, sector 0 kernel: unable to read partition table
I don't want the kernel to even bother trying to mount it as a filesystem. Honest. I'm running RedHat 9 with what appears to be a fairly recent version of usb and hotplug; I keep the system "up2date".
The sym53c8xx module is indeed loaded according to lsmod; my guess is that the kernel is allowing it to probe. I do have SCSI disks, so I don't think I can just rmmod the module (I tried and it claimed it was in use, even though I had my USB device unplugged at the time).
It is not clear to me what the precise order of processing is with regard to the hotplug scripts and how that interoperates with kernel-level device detection. Pointers?
I originally thought this was more of a "users" question than a "devel" question, since I have no interest in hacking the kernel itself or libusb or changing hotplug; instead, as a "user", I just don't want this USB device to get autodetected as being mountable as filesystem, and I'm happy to edit the config files as needed if that's sufficient. Since I haven't elicited an "ah ha" from the -users list, I'm trying this out as a "devel" question. My apologies to those of you seeing this as a time-delayed cross-post. For the sake of completeness, I have tried to include my responses to date with respect to questions raised by the folk on the -users list.
