USB devices never talk to each other except through the host. In fact every transaction is initiated by the host ... read the USB 2.0 spec, some of the earlier chapters give a good overview. If you're going to work on host controllers you'll need to know that quite well.


If this is the case, I suppose that Device and HC would have different addresses on this bus ?

The HC doesn't actually need an address, but Linux gives it one so that the root hub looks more like any other hardware.


None of that is specific to 2.4 kernels, the same is true on 2.2 and 2.6 Linux.
