Here's the latest. I upgraded both machines to kernel 2.6.1. I performed the following steps on each: reboot, wait for desktop to show up, insert USB flash drive, type "dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=1M count=40", wait for command to finish, remove USB flash drive, copy kern.log to web server. On the desktop machine (M7VIG-pro motherboard), it fails. On the laptop (Toshiba Portege), it succeeds.
