I found this in drivers/usb/core/usb.c (usb_register):

 [...] The list of unattached
* interfaces will be rescanned whenever a new driver is added, allowing
* the new driver to attach to any recognized devices.

That is exactly what I am looking for. I just realized that the other
usb serial devices do a usb_register in addition to the
usb_serial_register. I now do that too and it works. Learned something
again :-)
