I know this is going to start off sounding like something that needs to be
sent to an ALSA mailing list, but bear with me for a moment.

Recently I've been trying to get the USB-driven Audigy 2 NX to work under
Linux. There haven't been many reports of people even trying to get it
working in Linux; what few there are seem to be "no luck" reports, but I
did find one page that seemed to confirm it as working:
http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=2375

It was when I was playing with this that I discovered an interesting
behavior in the usbaudio initialization if it's compiled into the kernel
with ALSA. I'm including a full kernel log (up until the point where init
starts), be warned. You'll probably want to do a search for "USB" to get
down to business.

Whether or not this needs any real attention, I'm not sure. I'm just
obeying the command of the shiny "contact
[EMAIL PROTECTED]" warning. :) I think it's worth a
look at the very least, because if BOTH usbaudio and ALSA's snd-usb-audio
are compiled in when using this specific device, it will prevent ALSA from
having control of the card. This will not happen if both are compiled as
modules and manually inserted - apparently they can coexist that way. If
one should not enable these two drivers at the same time, it should
probably be mentioned in the kernel documentation. Otherwise, this
behavior needs investigating.
