Hallo Alan Stern , >> because i want to try giving back my externel case with genesys-logic >> usb2ide, which chipset is known to work good under linux? I want to ask >> the resellers now before i buy.

I also changed the dvd-burner against an old ide of 500MB for testing. Then the chip is identified as 5e3;702 instead 5e3;701, as opposed, but it is not predictable what happens. sometimes a dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc BS=1M count=500 works, also 2 times after another, than the drive blocks again. > I don't have any experience with firewire. Presumably it's faster than > USB, but maybe also more expensive. Here not so much, about 6 EUR the controller and about 15 EUR the case, compared to USB 2.0.
