I'm using slackware 9.1 (with updates and hotplug 2004_01_05) and kernel 2.4.25. I recently tried using a 256MB Lexar JumpDrive Sport. It was attached before turning the PC on and it caused a kernel oops (null pointer dereference, I think) when I went to mount it. Kernel 2.4.23 with hotplug 2003_08_05 also caused a similar oops at boot time. I did not include the crash dumps with this email, because they were only on my screen and I couldn't find them in /var/log/messages. My CompUSA 256MB usb flash drives work fine.

Searching google shows that a number of people have already reported similar kernel 2.4.x oops. I would expect/hope that even if a usb device is not supported under Linux, that it would not be capable of crashing the system (unless of course the device is defective).

If this bug hasn't been fixed yet, I'd be happy to assist a linux usb developer to resolve this problem. Please contact me via my e-mail address, if you're interested in working with me to resolve this reproducible bug.

Sincerely,

Peter Santoro
