From your log below, it looks like you have either a bad external hub or a bad cable connecting it to your computer.
Ah, this is probably true, I do not know why I haven't thought of that (and I did have some other weirdness once that could be explained by bad hub/cable)...
About your fix to scsi_scan - do I need to do anything to get it accepted into the kernel, or are you planning to take care of this? Thanks!
