Hello,

The short news: it works!  Or at least, it didn't oops when I
hot-synced, twice!  This is with the newest "Real patch that will be
added to the kernel tree" put up two days ago.

Thus I have endured the punishment, and am a better man for it. :-)

Gnome-pilot still has issues, but that's another matter.  Off to bug
that package's Debian maintainer about patching the memo-file conduit...
