It may not have appeared in the distribution kernels yet, but it will. It's a kernel configuration option under usb-storage labelled USB Mass Storage Write-Protected Media Detection (EXPERIMENTAL) You won't see it unless you have selected the Experimental option in the Code Maturity Level section. The facility was removed from 2.6 for a long time because it kept causing a lot of problems with certain drives. Hopefully it's working better now.
