Shucks, Pete, we only got this (disconnect in the midst of ongoing activity) working right in 2.6 a few weeks ago -- I think; it hasn't really been stress-tested yet. Not only is the 2.4 version of usb-storage missing all that development, but also the 2.4 SCSI stack is not nearly as clean as 2.6.
