When you open the port on a pl2303 device, a number of initialization
commands get sent to the device (due to the fact that no one has the
spec, and we really don't know what they due.)  Those commands most
likely initialize the device to some known state, probably erasing any
line settings previously set with some other program.

So when dd opens up the port, the settings most likely get trashed :(
