I see what you're getting at.  Note that in ll_rw_block.c, the kerneldoc 
for blk_queue_max_sectors() says this:

 * @max_sectors:  max sectors in the usual 512b unit

So it shouldn't matter what the hardware sector size is, assuming the 
documentation is correct.
