Thanks a lot for the effort. After this bug had occurred a few times, I finally switched my root filesystem from ext2 to ext3 (there had never been a need to). Guess what: since then, the bug hasn't appeared anymore... this might indicate it's really hard to find... I didn't touch the kernel for this.
