The easy "works right now" solution is to write the bConfigurationValue device attribute in sysfs. There's also been some discussion about adding a new driver method to help out here ... the locking requirements for the set_configuration call are unfortunately and hard for anyone outside usbcore to get right. It seems this is the week where drivers need that capability, though they've not needed it for the last couple years ...
