So Alan Stern offered to let me take over maintaining unusual_devs.h, and I since I'm actually interested in that, I decided to write up some notes on how that stuff worked for myself. In the spirit of open-source, I thought I'd share those (and Alan, who helped me flesh out the notes, pointed out that Mark R. might want to see these, so he's CC'd).
