This looks better, in the sense that you're doing everything right. I don't know why it still fails. Are you using a reasonably long value for the timeout? If you are then there must be an error either in the device itself or in the USB controller driver. You might try running this under 2.6.8.1 instead of 2.4. The drivers for 2.6 are much more robust.
