In this case the problem _reported_ is that the BIOS didn't give the controller to Linux. The usual workaround there is also in the BIOS: disable the legacy keyboard support. In case that fails, try not using FireWire (or at least loading it much later). It makes no sense, but in some systems it's been seen to interfere with USB.
