okay, using:

Linux version 2.6.9 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 3.3.3 (SuSE Linux)) #6 Fri Oct
22 14:47:47 MDT 2004

with the latest Changeset being

[EMAIL PROTECTED], 2004-10-19 18:27:56-07:00, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

i now cannot seem to hang the subsystem. when i pop a CF card into
the sandisk reader, i get hotplug activity, soon followed by a [scsi_eh_0]
thread, a [usb-storage], and a [usb-stor] thread. the [usb-stor] thread
goes away after a few seconds, and everything works.

when i pop the card out and reinsert it, the above repeats, except
i now have a [scsi_eh_1] thread. next time i get [scsi_eh_2], [scsi_eh_3],
etc.

these threads stick around, so i now have running:

  root 8798 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 14:54 0:00 [scsi_eh_0]
  root 9166 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 14:55 0:00 [scsi_eh_1]
  root 9860 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 14:55 0:00 [scsi_eh_2]
  root 10542 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 14:56 0:00 [scsi_eh_3]
  root 11249 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 14:57 0:00 [scsi_eh_4]
  root 11935 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 14:57 0:00 [scsi_eh_5]
  root 12650 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 14:59 0:00 [scsi_eh_6]
  root 13350 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 14:59 0:00 [scsi_eh_7]
  root 14057 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 14:59 0:00 [scsi_eh_8]
  root 14850 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 15:00 0:00 [scsi_eh_9]
  root 14851 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 15:00 0:00 [usb-storage]

a quick 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' reveals:

  Attached devices:
  Host: scsi9 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: SanDisk Model: ImageMate II Rev: 1.30
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

so, aside from leftover scsi threads, things seem to be working pretty well now.
