Hi, I am using two mobile data cards, a Sierra Aircard 580 (CDMA 1x EV-DO) and a Vodafone Mobile Connect (Option Wireless 3G/GPRS datacard).
Both cards seem to operate the same way, installing as a USB hub with
some attached serial devices, and this seems to be quite common for this
class of devices.
Although Linux recognises the USB hub OK, it doesn't appear to recognise
the serial devices without some handholding - I have to type in some
magic "modprobe usbserial" commands.
Should the kernel automatically notice these, or will I always need to
tell linux what the vendor ID and product ID are?
Sierra Aircard 580:
# modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1199 product=0x0112
Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS datacard:
# modprobe usbserial vendor=0x0af0 product=0x5000
Also, once I load usbserial in that way, udev (048) doesn't seem to
create the device nodes correctly:
