Yes, it's possible. It's also possible that there's nothing wrong with the memory card, but the camera has a bug that prevents it from working correctly when the card is installed. If you want to get more information about what goes wrong when the card is in the camera, you will have to turn on the usb-storage verbose debugging option in your kernel configuration and post the system log showing all the debugging messages for when you plug in the camera.
