Indeed, but it gives you a standard in-kernel ATM device, usable with
any ATM-aware tool.  I, for one, use it with br2684 kernel module to
get a standard in-kernel Ethernet device, on which in turn run pppd with
- you guessed it - kernel PPPoE support.  Isn't that convenient :) ?
