Crap. Folks, I must apologize for wasting your time. The issue seems to be that the USB ports on the case look to be connected to the motherboard improperly. I started plugging things into the ports on the back of the motherboard and everything seems to work just fine.
It's kind of odd that it detects device attachments but just can't talk to them.
