That is because your device is not registering itself with the tty
subsystem, right?  I bet CKermit wants to talk to a real tty device, not
a character device.

Use the usb serial interface to write a driver that will work properly
for all userspace programs that expect to see a tty interface (like
minicom and CKermit.)
