Hi (again)

I've discovered something quite weird.
When I boot, I don't have the connection, and I can't start it

If I remove the module speedtch and modprobe it,
I can start the connection.

I don't understand why.

Here the message I have in /var/log/messages:

when I boot:
localhost kernel: usb 3-6.1: no stage 1 firmware found!<6>parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [PCSPP,TRISTATE,EPP]
localhost modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting speedtch (/lib/modules/2.6.12-rc1/kernel/drivers/usb/atm/speedtch.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

when I: rmmod speedtch
Mar 31 21:42:25 localhost kernel: usb 3-6.1: no stage 1 firmware found!<4>usb 3-6.1: no stage 1 firmware found!<4>usb 3-6.1: no stage 1 firmware found!<6>usbcore: deregistering driver speedtch

when I: modprobe speedch
Mar 31 21:42:37 localhost kernel: ADSL line is up (608 Kib/s down | 160 Kib/s up)
Mar 31 21:42:37 localhost kernel: usbcore: registered new driver speedtch

After, a simple speedtouch_start works fine.

I hope it helps, Philippe

I'd rather have "select". I'm considering having it select ATM as well...
I think select is more logical: if someone has this modem, it's natural
that they simply choose to build the driver, and that dependencies are
automatically taken care of.

No, really -- it's entirely _unnatural_ that if they want to turn ATM
off, they can't because some random driver they don't care about has
_forced_ it to be on.

I agree on this one: if one has a USB DSL modem he can be expected to have enough clue to turn USB and ATM stacks on.

FW_LOADER however falls into a different category, where "select" is
IMHO more appropriate.

Roman.
